Details
Cotinus coggygria, Red Smoke Tree exhibits clusters of small, insignificant flowers that give the shrub a smoky appearance. Throughout the season the leaves turn from maroon-red in the spring, to blackish-purple in the summer, to scarlet shades in the fall. Provides best color in full sun. Smoke Tree prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Side dress with compost in fall. To keep the plant shrub-like, annually trim back all stems to within 2-3 buds from the base. For growing as a tree remove only crossing or wayward stems to maintain a healthy frame. Pruning is best done in early spring.
